Certifications explained
green seal®
A Green Seal Certification Mark on a product means that it has gone through a stringent process to show that it has less impact on the environment and human health. Green Seal takes a life cycle assessment approach, evaluating a product from the raw materials through the manufacturing process and ending with recycling or disposal. Products only become certified after rigorous science-based evaluation, including on-site plant visits.
The Green Seal Mark on products or services is an instant indicator that they have met or exceeded leadership-level, life-cycle-based criteria for sustainability. Companies look for, and often require, the use of Green Seal products because they know it equals environmental and health excellence.
greenguard®
Simply put, GREENGUARD Certification ensures that a product has met some of the world's most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.
The GREENGUARD Certification Program gives assurance that products designed for use in indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, which contribute to the creation of healthier interiors. Achieving GREENGUARD Certification gives credence to manufacturers’ sustainability claims, backing them with empirical scientific data from an unbiased, third-party organization.
GREENGUARD Gold Certification Program offers stricter certification criteria, considers safety factors to account for sensitive individuals (such as children and the elderly), and ensures that a product is acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. It is referenced by both The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Building Rating System.
ECOLOGO®
ECOLOGO Certified products, services and packaging are certified for reduced environmental impact. ECOLOGO Certifications are voluntary, multiattribute, life cycle-based environmental certifications that indicate a product has undergone rigorous scientific testing, exhaustive auditing or both, to prove its compliance with stringent, third-party, environmental performance standards.
USDA Certified BIOBASEd
Managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the goal of the BioPreferred® Program is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label is designed to provide useful information to consumers about the biobased content of the product. The label assures a consumer that the product contains a USDA-verified amount of renewable biological ingredients. Products need to meet a minimum biobased content set by USDA. The manufacturers of these products must test the biobased content at an independent, third party laboratory.
